Exploring Europe by Train: A Scenic exploit

A beginner-friendly guide to planning a European rail trip: choosing hubs, using night trains and the small habits that keep journeys stress-free.

Planning your first multi-country rail trip in Europe can feel overwhelming, but it’s simpler than it looks. A few planning habits turn a pile of timetables into a smooth, enjoyable journey.

Build your route around hubs

Major cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna and Milan are well connected by fast trains, so they make natural anchors for an itinerary. Pick two or three hubs, then add smaller towns along the way. Try not to change hotels every night; two or three nights per stop gives you time to enjoy each place.

Consider a night train

Sleeper services across parts of Europe let you cover long distances while you rest, saving a night’s accommodation and a day of travel. Book early, as couchettes and sleeper berths are limited and popular.

Handy habits for the journey

  • Use a rail planner app to compare times, platforms and connections across countries.
  • Arrive at the station 20 to 30 minutes early; platforms are often announced shortly before departure.
  • Validate paper tickets if the station requires it, and keep your ticket until you leave the destination station.
  • Pack a light bag you can lift onto an overhead rack without help.

Leave a little slack for delays and you’ll find the train is as much a part of the holiday as the destinations themselves.
