Exploring Europe by Train: A Scenic Adventure

From Swiss glaciers to Norwegian fjords, discover the most scenic train routes in Europe and how to choose the right tickets for your journey.

Europe’s rail network is one of the most relaxing ways to see the continent. Instead of airports and traffic, you get big windows, comfortable seats and landscapes that roll past like a film. These are some of the routes that make the journey the destination.

Scenic routes worth building a trip around

  • Glacier Express, Switzerland: a slow, panoramic crossing of the Alps between Zermatt and St. Moritz, over viaducts and through spiral tunnels.
  • Bernina Express, Switzerland to Italy: a high-altitude line that passes glaciers and descends towards Lake Como country.
  • Oslo to Bergen, Norway: mountain plateaus, fjord views and snowy landscapes along one of Europe’s most celebrated railway lines.
  • Rhine Valley, Germany: castles, vineyards and small riverside towns along a classic stretch of track.
  • Ligurian coast, Italy: regional trains that hug the sea and stop at colourful villages such as those of the Cinque Terre.

Tickets and passes

Rail passes such as Interrail and Eurail can be good value if you plan to take many long journeys, but they aren’t always cheaper. Compare the pass price with advance point-to-point fares for your route, and remember that high-speed and scenic trains often require a paid seat reservation on top of the pass.

Pack light, sit on the side of the train with the better view, and keep snacks handy. Some of the most memorable stretches have no station for miles.
